CAD Audio GXL2200
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The CAD GXL2200 is an inexpensive large-diaphragm, side-address condenser with a fixed Cardioid polar pattern.
The unit we’ve examined is identical to at least some production runs of the Nady SCM-900. It uses a version of the Schoeps transformerless impedance conversion circuit, with a high-pass filter on a pushbutton switch on the audio circuit board. This circuit is very responsive to modification and can deliver impressive performance once optimized.
The capsule is a standard 32mm Chinese K67, with only one diaphragm metallized. Because the Schoeps circuit has no corrective EQ, the microphone’s sound tends to be peaky and bright, with a sharp +5dB peak around 12kHz.
The mic ships with a storage pouch and, depending on vintage, either a ring mount or an elastic shockmount.
Sound On Sound 2006
As a vocal mic, I rather liked the no-frills GXL2200, as its more pronounced presence peak is high enough to create a sense of air and intimacy without making the upper mid-range sound harsh. It adds a nice gloss to vocals and also does a creditable job on acoustic guitar. Used fairly close, the proximity effect gives a plausible ‘radio DJ’ character to the low end of the voice. Although there is nothing much to differentiate this mic from dozens of similar Chinese-built models, it’s certainly capable of making excellent-sounding recordings.
The CAD Audio GXL2200 is also known as: GXL-2200.
