Definition of "5840":

The 5840 vaccuum tube is a subminiature pentode tube. According to David Royer of Royer Labs, "The 5840 tube is electrically similar to the AC701K tube used in such microphones as the Neumann M-49." Royer used the tube in his MXL 2001 tube mod, in both the Mojave Audio tube mics, and in the R-122V tube ribbon. These were not the first uses of the 5840 in condenser mics, though; for example, see the Altec Lansing M-20, which was released in the mid-1960s.
