Telefunken USA’s Ela M 260 is a small-diaphragm tube condenser that ships with three detachable capsules (omni, cardioid, hypercardioid) and is compatible with dozens more capsules made by other vendors (see list below).
This mic is not a historical reproduction of the vintage Telefunken of the same name. The original Ela M 260 was manufactured by AKG for Telefunken, and used a Telefunken AC701 tube and AKG’s CK28 capsule.
This mic uses a NOS Telefunken EF-732 tube. The transformer is custom-designed by AMI/TAB-Funkenwerk; see their model T60.
AMI also designed the amplifier circuit in the microphone. As of September, 2009, Telefunken Elektroakustik and AMI/Tab-Funkenwerk ended their exclusive licensing agreement, effectively making the T60 transformer and potentially also the M260 circuit design available to other AMI customers.
The mic ships in a padded wooden box, and includes a dedicated power supply and Gotham Audio cable, a mic clip, a shock mount, Telefunken USA’s three stock capsules, the adapter for AKG/BLUE/JZ capsules, an owner’s manual, and a fully transferable 10-year warranty.
The Telefunken USA Ela M 260 won the 2008 TEC award for Outstanding Technical Achievement in the Microphone category.
