X/Y StereoMXL 990 USB Stereo

X/Y Stereo Condenser Stereo Microphone

MXL’s 990 USB Stereo is an XY-stereo microphone with an onboard analog-digital converter that is capable of 16-bit, 48kHz sampling.

The capsules and preamp electronics are identical to the 990 Stereo microphone: dual 17mm gold-sputtered diaphragms (in 22mm-diameter capsules) mounted at 90° to one another, with dual Class A transformerless preamp circuits. Whereas the 990 Stereo mic has a 5-pin XLR connector (to output two separate analog audio streams), the USB version has a single USB jack and outputs a stereo digital audio stream.

The 990 USB Stereo incorporates a 3-way pad not found on the XLR version of the mic. The three positions are marked “Hi” (flat / 0dB attenuation), “Med” (-5dB), and “Lo” (-10dB).

The mic ships with a hard-shell plastic carrying case, a desktop tripod stand (MXL p/n MXL DS-01) and a 10-foot USB cable.

See also the USB.007, which appears to be an identical microphone. Included accessories may differ.

The mic was released in 2007.
