MXL 990 USB
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The 990-USB is a small-diaphragm FET condenser with built-in analog-digital converter capable of delivering a 16-bit, 48-kHz digital audio stream via its USB interface. It is the USB version of the MXL 990, a popular and well-documented analog condenser microphone.
(Some of the specs below were copied from the product data provided for the 990, because MXL’s USB products are not well-documented.)
The 990 and 990USB use MXL’s standard small-diaphragm capsule, found in the 603S pencil mic and numerous others. See the 603S listing for more. It has a 17mm diaphragm, stacked on top of a 20mm backplate, within a 22mm (OD) housing.
As is typical of all the USB microphones we’ve seen, this mic’s circuit is comprised primarily of surface-mount electronics, including IC chips.
