CardioidElectro-Voice ND68

Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

The EV ND68 is a kick drum-specific dynamic neodymium microphone. It replaces the N/D 868 microphone, and is part of EV’s more recent ND series.

The ND68, like all mics in the ND series, has a neodymium magnet within the moving-coil cartridge. The high-strength “rare earth” magnet keeps the microphone’s weight low, and output level high (relatively speaking).

We believe the ND68 shares the same large diaphragm capsule as the other ND dynamic mics. It shares the other mics’ humbucking coil as well, which attenuates hum and electromagnetic interference.

The mic body is made of die cast zinc, and the grill is EV’s “memraflex” material that is extremely rigid and resistant to dents and drops.

The ND68, being a kick-drum specific microphone, has extreme proximity effect, jumping almost 15db at 75Hz when positioned 2.5cm to the source. The midrange is predictably relaxed, as in most kick drum microphones, and it has a substantial 8db peak at 5k to capture the snap of the kick drum beater.

In addition to traditional kick drum mic’ing, the ND68 documentation gives instruction on how to use the ND68 as a bass cabinet mic, suggesting the novel placement of the mic at a 90 degree angle to the speaker.

The ND68 is sold with a mic clip and cloth bag.

The Electro-Voice ND68 is also known as: ND 68, ND-68.

The mic was released in 2016.
