SupercardioidElectro-Voice ND46

Supercardioid Dynamic Microphone

The EV ND46 is an end-address, supercardioid dynamic microphone. It is an updated version of the N/D 468. It is part of EV’s new ND line, which replaces the N/Dyn microphones. The ND46 is designed to be used on drums, guitar cabinets, and bass cabinets.

The head of the ND46 is yoke-mounted with a swiveling head, and has a unique locking feature. Depress the lock, and the head swivels freely. Once the lock is released, the head stays in place. This prevents the microphone’s element from changing position if the head is bumped (or hit with a stick), while making initial positioning easy.

The yoke is made from die-cast zinc, with a die-cast aluminum shank, and, like its siblings in the ND line, a “memraflex” grill screen that is designed to withstand rough treatment (i.e. drum stick hits and drops) without denting.

Also like the other ND mics, the ND46 has a large diaphragm moving-coil cartridge with a Mylar diaphragm. According to Electro-Voice, the lightweight diaphragm has low mass for quick transient response. The diaphragm has a cloth layer over it for moisture (i.e. sweat) protection. The magnet, as the “ND” would indicate, is neodymium, giving the microphone a high output with lighter physical weight. The capsule is fitted with a humbucking coil to guard against EMI (electromagnetic interference).

Like its little brother the ND44, the ND46 does not have a great deal of low frequency response when positioned at a distance from the source. However, it is cleverly designed so as to take advantage of proximity effect. When placed at 2.5cm from the source, there is a low end boost of 10db at 100Hz. The engineer is therefore encouraged to vary the distance from the source to tailor the low end response to his or her liking.

The ND46 is sold with a mic clip and a cloth bag.

The Electro-Voice ND46 is also known as: ND 46, ND-46.

The mic was released in 2016.
