CardioidElectro-Voice ND44

Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

The Electro-Voice ND44 is a dynamic instrument microphone, designed for close placement on drums. It is part of EV’s new ND line, which replaces the N/Dyn microphones. The ND44 is a new microphone, having no predecessor in the N/Dyn line.

The ND44 housing is made from die-cast zinc, with an ABS polycarbonate (plastic) head, and a “memraflex” grill screen that is designed to withstand rough treatment (i.e. drum stick hits) without denting.

The microphone comes with EV’s DRC-2 drum clamping system, which has a finger loop on the bottom that facilitates easy clamping of the mic onto a drum rim. The clamp has a mic clip that holds the ND44, and the clip pivots on the clamp. The lollipop-style head of the ND44 also pivots, so two pivot points are available for easy positioning.

Like all of the ND series, the ND44 has a large diaphragm dynamic cartridge with a Mylar diaphragm. Electro-Voice states that capsule is lightweight and of low mass, to enable quick transient response. The diaphragm has a cloth layer over it for moisture (i.e. sweat) protection. The magnet, as the “ND” would indicate, is neodymium, giving the microphone a high output level.

The ND44 has an internal humbucking coil designed to isolate the electronics from potential line noise.

The frequency chart indicates that the ND44 does not have a great deal of low end response when at a distance from the source, however, it is cleverly designed so as to take advantage of proximity effect. When placed at 2.5cm from the source, there is a low end boost of 10db at 100Hz. The engineer is therefore encouraged to vary the distance from the drum - using the dual pivots described above - to tailor the low end response to his or her liking.

Sensitivity figures indicate that the ND44 is not a very sensitive microphone (2.4mV/Pa), and therefore suited to loud instruments such as a tom or snare drum.

The ND44 is sold with the DRC-2 drum clamp and a cloth bag. A stand adapter (SAND-1) is available separately.

The Electro-Voice ND44 is also known as: ND-44, ND 44.

The mic was released in 2016.
