AKG Acoustics C 414 XLS
Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone
The C414-XLS is a multipattern FET condenser microphone, the latest in the ULS/XLS series of “linear/neutral” studio microphones. The primary new feature of the revised mic is that it offers 9 polar patterns, rather than five.
Pattern for pattern, the frequency response of the XLS matches that of the B-XLS. The self-noise is the same, 6dBA. The new mic is slightly less sensitive (20mV/Pa) than the B-XLS (23mV/Pa).
The pattern, pad, and filter are selected via pushbutton controls on the body of the microphone. Current selections are indicated by LEDs. As on the B-XLS, the controls can be locked to prevent accidental reconfiguration during handling.
The clip indicator LED introduced on the B-XLS is improved on the XLS, in that the LED stays lit for 3 seconds.
Like the B-XLS, the new XLS employs surface-mount components within its circuit boards.
The amplifier circuit is a low-noise design, making the mic one of the lowest-noise mics we have seen (6dBA regardless of pattern).
The mic ships with a shockmount (AKG p/n H 85), a detachable pop filter (p/n PF 80), a foam windscreen (p/n W414), and a “Soundtool” suitcase.
The C 414 XLS is also available in matched stereo pairs (p/n C 414 XLS/ST).
