Multi-Pattern Condenser Stereo Microphone

Studio Projects’ LSD2 is a stereo multipattern FET condenser microphone with transformerless output.

Two 27mm capsules are mounted atop one another. The lower capsule is fixed in place; the top capsule can be rotated 270° relative to the lower, allowing an infinite variety of stereo options.

Both capsules are dual-diaphragm, multipattern designs, capable of being switched between Cardioid, Omni, and Figure-of-8 responses. Setting both to Cardioid, offset by 90° produces a typical coincident-pair or XY stereo response. Setting both to figure-8 would produce a Blumlein response. In both cases, the stereo field can be modified by adjusting the angle of separation or the pickup pattern of either capsule.

The mic can also produce a mid-side response, by setting the front-facing (“mid”) capsule to Cardioid, and adjusting the top capsule to figure-8 at 90° (“side”).

Electronic Musician

The guitar sound that I recorded with the LSD2 in an M-S configuration was nothing short of brilliant.

A pad, a high-pass filter, and the pattern selection for each capsule is controlled by switches mounted on the microphone body. A pair of switches on the front provide access to the pad/HPF (one switch) and pattern (second switch) for the lower, fixed capsule. A duplicate pair of switches on the rear of the mic body control the top capsule.

The LSD2 kit includes the mic, a 25' Y-cable (5-pin female XLR to two XLR3M, one per capsule), an elastic shockmount, and a foam windscreen; it ships in a padded hard case.

The LSD2 was introduced at Winter NAMM 2003; the mic began shipping in March of 2003 at an MSRP of $999.

The Studio Projects LSD2 is also known as: LSD-2.

The mic was released in 2003.
