Gauge Microphones ECM-84
Detachable-Capsule Pencil Condenser Microphone
The ECM-84 is Gauge’s low-cost pencil condenser microphone. It provides Cardioid and Omnidirectional pickup patterns via a pair of interchangeable capsules.
The capsules are true condensers (externally biased), and are believed to have 22mm diaphragms.
Two switches on the microphone body provide access to a -10dB pad and a high-pass filter (slope and cutoff frequency unknown). These switches differentiate the ECM-84 from some competitive models; the MXL 604, for example, has a single switch that can engage the pad or filter, but not both, whereas the Advanced Audio CM-54 provides a two-position pad and two-position filter.
The ECM-84 bears a superficial similarity to the Apex 185 and Alctron HST-02A, but boasts lower self-noise than both.
The ECM-84 ships with an elastic shockmount, two interchangeable capsules — one cardioid, one omni — and a padded wooden storage box.
