Electro-Voice 635A
Omnidirectional Dynamic Microphone
The EV635 is a rugged, compact omnidirectional dynamic microphone popular in the news industry.
According to EV:
- This is the best known news gathering microphone in the world
- It is incredibly durable
- It is known as “The Buchanan Hammer” (a nickname appropriated from the discontinued Electro-Voice 664, presumably for marketing reasons)
Two colors are available:
- 635A - Fawn Beige
- 635B - Semi-Gloss black
Both models have a steel case and a 4-stage pop filter. The mic takes the EV 311 stand adapter, and will fit any 19mm mic clip.
The 635 enjoys a strong following among rec.audio.pro members:
Scott DorseyYou should be ashamed of yourself for not owning any EV 635As. They cost less than SM57s and are just as versatile. This is like having a studio without a coffee machine.
But note that that quote is from 1998.
The mic’s lack of low end and lack of proximity effect make it useful in certain situations such as miking guitar cabinets and some vocals.
The 635A comes up in conversation often on The Home Recording Show Podcast by host Ryan Canestro. Episode 127 features a shootout with the EV 635A on Bass cabinet.

The Electro-Voice 635A is also known as: 635B, 635A/B, 635, 635A(B).
