CardioidEarthworks Audio P30/C

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The P30/C is one of the two microphones in Earthworks’ Periscope™ series. It is essentially an SR30 Cardioid condenser, with the SR30’s tapered body replaced by a 4-inch gooseneck.

The adjustable neck allows the mic’s capsule to be easily positioned in tight or hard-to-reach spaces, such as under the strings of an acoustic bass.

The P30/C shares the SR30’s flat, extended frequency response (30Hz–30kHz at 6 inches) and the fast transient response that is the hallmark of Earthworks’ “High Definition” microphones.

The mic’s impedance conversion circuitry is transformerless, with relatively high current draw (10mA) and self-noise (22dBA) — although for close-miked applications, the self-noise is unlikely to be audible.

Like many of Earthworks’ mics, the P30/C is covered by Patent US6091829, which describes the use of a conical element behind the capsule to alter the capsule’s frequency response and, presumably, improve its Cardioid pattern control.
