Mods for the HSGT-2B

    The Alctron “2B”/Nady TCM-1050 use a K67-style large-diaphragm capsule, which in the absence of appropriate downstream equalization produces an exaggerated, hyped HF response. Revoice these over-bright microphones easily by swapping the stock capsule for the RK-47, a true single-backplate 34mm condenser capsule modeled after Neumann’s famed K-47.

    Brian Fox’ “C12” and “251” mods include a Peluso CEK12 capsule, upgraded capacitors, a Peluso BV11P transformer, and a selected 6072 tube. The C12 also incorporates a circuitry change to implement fixed grid bias voltage. The resulting mics’ frequency response shows a smooth +3dB lift at 10kHz, similar to the original AKG/Telefunken microphones.
    The “47” mod includes a Peluso PK47 capsule, a selected 6072 tube, and a choice of transformers (Peluso BV11P, Cinemag CM-2480 or CM-2461), upgraded electronic components, and circuitry changes to replicate some of the characteristics of the U-47.

    Michael Joly’s mod for the Nady TCM-1050 swaps the stock K67-style capsule for his MJE-K47 capsule, converts the headbasket to single-layer, upgrades the tube to a 6072a, and includes wiring and capacitor improvements.

    Mark Chierego’s mod for the HSGT-2B and clones (Nady TCM-1050) includes circuit and component upgrades such as transformer (Lundahl, Samar, Cinemag), tube and capsule (K-47 or CK-12 style). The mics are voiced with either the Neumann U47 or AKG C12 in mind.

    Dave’s mods to the HST-2b (and rebadged equivalents such as the Nady TCM-1050) include a tube swap (discard the 12AX7, install 12AT7 or 6072a/12AY7), a transformer swap (e.g. the Cinemag CM-2461 provides 12dB more headroom and 3dB more gain than the stock unit), and a Peluso CEK-367 capsule, plus circuitry changes.

Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone

The HSGT-2B is a large-diaphragm, multipattern tube mic, made in China by Alctron and sold under a variety of familiar brand names.

The specs claim the tube is a selected 6072/12AT7, but is more commonly a 12AX7 which has different characteristics and is arguably a poor fit for the mic’s schematic — leading to the common and easy mod of replacing the tube (assuming it’s socketed) with a true 6072/12AY7.

The mic ships with a power supply, 7-pin cable, spider shockmount, foam windscreen, and an aluminum road case.

Note that Alctron’s published frequency-response graphs for this mic are identical to the HST-11A, and in fact to most of their large-diaphragm tube condensers.
