Sontronics STC-2
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The STC-2 is a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone from British company Sontronics. It was part of the company’s initial product line when it launched in 2005.
The STC-2 features two switches, one for a -10 dB pad, and the other for a high-pass filter at 75 Hz.
The mic’s capsule is a large-diaphragm model, presumably a 32mm K67-style capsule with a one-inch diaphragm.
A schematic posted to GroupDIY (see sidebar link) reveals that the mic has no DC oscillator; the capsule is reportedly polarized at about 36VDC, which is low for a large-diaphragm condenser. This helps to explain the mic’s high noise floor of 18dBA.
The mic’s frequency response graph shows a prominent HF boost (+6dB) at 8 kHz, and a rolloff of the higher frequencies.
The STC-2 ships in a padded aluminum flightcase, and includes a traditional “spider” shockmount with extra elastic bands. It is available in either silver or black finish.
The Sontronics STC-2 is also known as: STC2, STC 2.
The mic was released in 2005.
