Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The SE X1s is the updated version of the X1, SE’s popular entry-level, fixed-cardioid, transformerless condenser microphone.

There are numerous changes from the original X1:

  • The X1’s low cut filter now provides two options, with rolloffs at 160Hz and 80Hz.

  • The X1’s switchable 10dB pad now offers two attenuation options, -10dB and -20dB.

  • Self-noise is now 9db, down from 16db.

  • The mic is now capable of handling 160db SPL, a large increase over the previous version’s 125db SPL.

  • The X1s is more sensitive: sensitivity has been raised from 25mv/Pa to 30mV/Pa.

  • The mic’s output impedance has changed from 200 ohms to 125 ohms, which should allow the mic to drive a longer cable (although we don’t consider 200 Ohms a limitation in this sense).

  • The XLR connector pins are now gold-plated.

  • SE has given the X1s a different paint job, though the mic is still black.

  • The mic clip has been redesigned.

SE sells the mic with a clip but also sells a bundle with a reflexion filter, a pop screen, a shockmount, and a cable.

The mic was released in 2017.
