CardioidRØDE NT1

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The black NT1, announced in 2013, is the latest revision to Rode’s popular NT1/NT1-A product line. The mic has been redesigned completely, retaining only the most basic elements of its ancestors: the grille, the transformerless circuit topology, and the name.

NT1 (2014) PCBAlthough similar in appearance to the NT1-A’s capsule, the NT1’s “HF6” capsule has undergone significant changes internally. Both are edge-terminated, single-diaphragm designs.

RODE

[The HF6 capsule] has been developed with a focus on detailed midrange response, coupled with silky smooth high frequencies, and warm, round, bass reproduction.

The new capsule is mounted on a low-mass Lyre shockmount. This is an innovative development, in that it offers much greater isolation than the hard rubber mounting post or harness that is more commonly employed in condenser microphones.

The NT1’s circuit has undergone changes analogous to the HF6 capsule. Although it retains its transformerless, electronically-balanced topology, and its IC-based surface-mount implementation, numerous component and layout changes have been made, with the result that the mic’s self-noise level — already a remarkable 5dBA in the NT1-A — has dropped to 4.5dBA.

As was true of the NT1-A, the new NT1 uses an integrated circuit on the PCB to increase the DC voltage from the ~48V phantom supply to the ~70V needed to properly bias the capsule. This IC is not part of the audio circuit.

The new NT1 is sold with a hardmount (MSRP $375), or bundled with Rode’s new SMR shockmount and metal-mesh pop filter (MSRP $395).

The SMR shockmount uses the familiar Lyre suspension technology from Rycote, but implemented in an innovative way: two independent Lyre mounts of different weights and tensions are employed, such that the smaller one acts as a “tensioning element” so that the larger Lyre is held closer to a neutral position, where it can most effectively cancel vibration.
