Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone

The Milab DM-1001 digital microphone system consists of dual-diaphragm condenser microphone, remote control box, and PC software.

The DM1001 microphone features a large dual rectangular diaphragm capsule. The output of each diaphragm connects to an onboard Analog-to-Digital converter operating at 24bit, 48kHz. A 5-pin XLR connects to the remote box.

In addition to digital connectivity, the PPU01 remote box allows for computer-free operation of the DM1001 microphone. Featured on the front of the box: power switch, error indicator, and 12 position rotary switch for polar pattern selection, user presets, mute and test signal. Power, RS232, 5-pin XLR microphone input, 3-pin XLR (AES) digital output connections are on the rear of the remote control unit.

Five polar patterns are switchable on the remote box:

  • cardioid
  • Wide Cardioid
  • Omni
  • Supercardioid
  • Figure-8

Additional patterns are available via the four user-presets.
The final switch position outputs each diaphragm signal on discrete channels.

The PC-only Acoustic Design software adds additional functionality to the DM1001 system but is not required for normal operation. To utilize the in-between polar pattern, pad and filter options, presets must be stored to the remote box.

Resolution 2004
The sound of this microphone is very satisfying. Nowhere near as clinical as other microphones that put the A-DC straight after the capsule, the DM1001 manages to sound characterful without being coloured. One if its most impressive traits is the distinct lack of tonal colouration as sound sources move off-axis to the directional patterns — there’s a slight lumpiness about the high frequencies, but in most cases it sounds like a very progressive, natural drop in level.

The Milab Microphones DM-1001 is also known as: DM1001.

The mic was released in 1999.
