MXL 870
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The MXL 870 is a large-diaphragm condenser billed as an all-purpose “utility” microphone.
It combines familiar MXL elements: the surface-mount transformerless circuit found in the V250 and 910 (and presumably the 2006 and V63M) with the 32mm K67 capsule found in the V63M and 2006 and numerous other models.
It is a good candidate for modification; see the options in the sidebar.
In the sample we tested, the capsule’s front diaphragm was polarized at 50VDC. The mic is a good mod candidate, with replacement capsule options and also a replacement circuit option; see the sidebar listing.
The mic ships with an elastic shockmount in a cardboard box. Spare elastics for the shockmount are included.
