Mods for the 550

  • Microphone PartsMicrophone Parts
After swapping the MXL 910’s small capsule for a large-diaphragm K47 or CK-12 type, the microphone becomes very usable. To take the mic to the next level, the exclusive “SMT Mini-Mod” from Microphone-Parts rebuilds the front end circuit to reduce noise, increase sensitivity, and reduce distortion. Choose the RK-47 for a balanced, all-purpose sound, the RK7 for a darker, vintage sound, with ribbon-like smoothness, or the RK-12 for a brighter and more present sound.

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The MXL 550 is a small-diaphragm condenser microphone with a transformerless circuit. It is internally identical to the MXL 910, and the new surface-mount MCA SP-1.

550Current production microphones use surface-mount circuit boards. The circuit itself is MXL’s version of the Schoeps transformerless circuit.

The capsule is MXL’s standard 17.1mm diameter, small-diaphragm design, also found on the MXL 990, 910, MCA SP-1, and others.

As of June 2013, the 550 is sold only as part of MXL’s “550/551R Microphone Ensemble,” a two-mic set that also includes a small-diaphragm condenser (the 551). The two mics ship in a padded plastic lunchbox with a polishing cloth and two hard mounts (one per mic).
