Mods for the 5000

The MXL 5000 is a good candidate for a capsule swap. The circuit is linear with respect to frequency, so our RK-47 or RK-12 would both be better choices than the stock K67 type.

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The MXL 5000 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with switchable pad and filter. The capsule is MXL’s standard 32mm K67 type, found in dozens of other models. The circuit borrows its DC converter, used to generate the polarization voltage, from the earliest transformerless MXL mics, such as the V57.

In the sample we tested, the DC circuit polarized the capsule’s backplate to 66VDC.

MXL 5000 CircuitAn inspection of the audio circuit reveals some high-quality parts, such as Nichicon capacitors.
