MXL 440
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The MXL 440 is an inexpensive FET condenser with a fixed Cardioid polar pattern.
It is essentially identical to the MCA SP1, in that it uses MXL’s common Schoeps-style transformerless circuit, and the 603S small-diaphragm capsule (mounted within a brass ring) such as found in the MXL 990 and MCA SP1.
Although MXL changed most of its production to surface-mount circuit boards in early 2013, a sample 440 purchased by us in September 2015 used MXL’s “V57” circuit board pair, with leaded components.
Whether made with leaded components or surface-mount, the 440 is a decent DIY upgrade platform; see options in the sidebar.
The mic ships with a plastic ring mount (MXL p/n MT-001).
It is sold individually, or in a 2-mic bundle including the MXL 441 pencil mic, in a rugged road case.
