Kel Audio Song Sparrow
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The Song Sparrow is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pickup pattern. It is intended as a vocal mic, but has applications for instrument miking too.
The mic employs an edge-terminated, 34mm (O.D.) capsule voiced to have an open top end. It has a 26.5mm diaphragm made of 3-micron Mylar.
The amplifier circuit is similar to that of the HM-7U, albeit without the filter or pad. Note that the HM-7U uses a K47-style capsule, whereas the Song Sparrow uses a CK12-style capsule.
Both mics use high-grade components, including Wima film capacitors.
As with all the Kel Audio mics, the Song Sparrow uses a transformerless, low-noise output circuit.
The Song Sparrow has a flat frequency response between 100Hz and 3kHz, and a smooth presence peak above 3kHz, peaking at +5dB at 9–10kHz. Similarly, there is a +5dB peak at 40Hz, due in part to proximity effect (measured at 0.5m).
The mic is scheduled to ship in April, 2010. It will include a shockmount and an aluminum flight case.
