Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone

The Phanthera V is a multipattern version of the company’s fixed-cardioid Phanthera. Both are large-diaphragm FET condensers, designed “reference quality microphone which could stand beside the sound characteristics of the coveted tube models VMA and VMX.”

In other words, the Phanthera mics are FET condensers voiced to reproduce tube-mic characteristics.

The V includes a 3-way pattern selection switch on the mic body, enabling the selection of cardioid, omnidirectional, or bidirectional (figure-of-8) patterns. Unlike the Phanthera, it also includes a -10dB pad (switched from the mic body).

The following review of the cardioid-only Phanthera is likely descriptive of the V as well:

Sound On Sound

Dirk Brauner has managed to make a range of microphones that all sound larger than life in a very flattering way, and the Phanthera is no exception. Although obviously not a valve microphone, it does have something of the richness of tone and intimacy that you would expect from that technology, yet without the almost inherent noise (and heat).

Resolution, 2008

A much darker [sounding mic] than the Phantom, it works well with male and female vocals. Chest sounds are more pronounced, and worked close there is a definite sense of low-mid enhancement to the sound in addition to the expected proximity effect.

The original intention with the Phanthera was to ty to create a FET-based microphone that possessed many of the sonic characteristics of a valve-based design, and when I reviewed it, it was clear that this had been successful.

The mic was released in 2008.
