Brauner Phanthera
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The Brauner Phanthera is a fixed-cardioid, Large Diaphragm FET Condenser.
Brauner’s solid-state microphones are designed to match the sound of their tube mics. Brauner lists the Phanthera as “charming” as opposed to “Natural” for the Phantom Classic.
According to Dirk Brauner, the Phanthera and Phantom series use the same capsule, but different circuitry.
In 2008 the Phanthera was nominated for a TEC award.
Sound On Sound 2007
As with all Brauner mics, there is a substantial proximity effect, which is tailored to flatter voices over the typical working range.
…it sounds large, smooth, flattering and very natural in a ‘modernised vintage’ kind of way. It’s the sort of sound that is instantly flattering to everyone’s voice, and it could quickly become a first-choice mic. Everyone will fall in love with its sound character…
Mix Magazine 2008
The sound was extremely clear but not overly bright — it had more of a “clinical” sound that inferred accuracy and a sharp focus. Its cardioid pattern is wide and very forgiving — I rarely heard any difference as my singer moved from side to side or up and down in front of the mic. In tone, I liked that the mic was consistently clear and warm, no matter how loudly or softly she sang, nor how high or low. This is an extremely quiet microphone and I could start to hear the noise floor of the signal chain before the mic’s noise floor.
The Phanthera ships with: Aluminum case, VOVOX XLR Cable, and BMS-2 Suspension mount.
The Phanthera is also available in a “Basic Edition” without accessories besides a non-shock absorbing mount.
The Brauner Phanthera is also known as: Phanthera Basic.
