Cardioid Pencil Condenser Microphone

The Audix f9 is an electret pencil condenser mic, intended as a relatively low-cost instrument condenser. It is part of the new/relaunched Audix “Fusion Series,” designed and assembled in the US.

The f9s also have a nice slight boost in the 8kHz range that adds shimmer and improves stick definition, especially when playing ride bell. Like the others in the series, the f9s provide the sound you need fast, which is great for live.

The f9 definitely kept up with its more expensive competition, yielding a clear and faithful sound when used as an overhead and as a spot mic on the hi-hats. I’d characterize its sound as relatively transparent and realistic, without imparting a ton of character on its own. Those might not be exciting adjectives, but for a microphone that will inevitably be called on to reproduce a wide variety of instrumental sources, it’s a very good thing indeed.
