Violet Design Ltd. Globe Vintage
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
Violet’s Globe microphones are transformerless FET condensers, with large-diaphragm capsules encased in a small lollipop-style spherical headbasket.
Both the Standard and Vintage models use dual-diaphragm capsules, but they produce different frequency responses. The Globe Vintage is voiced for a “sweet and warm, vintage vocal sound,” via the company’s VD47 capsule — modeled after the tone of Neumann’s K47 capsule.
The VD47 (unlike the K47) uses two backplates. Both sides are skinned with 6-micron Mylar diaphragms, although presumably the rear diaphragm is not sputtered or wired into the circuit.
Both Globe models, and the company’s near-lookalike Global Pre head amp, contain the same transformerless amplifier circuit design.
The VD47 capsule can also be found in Violet’s bayonet-mount VIN47 capsule head, which fits the Global Pre. The Global Pre with the VIN47 is therefore probably a close sonic match to the Globe Vintage; any differences would be due to mechanical issues such as the size and shape of the headbasket and microphone body. As of this writing (February, 2009) the street price for the Global Pre / VIN47 combination is nearly $200 less than the street price of the Globe Vintage, and provides more flexibility at lower cost.)
The Globe Vintage ships in a wooden box with a shockmount (Violet p/n GSM).
The Violet Design Ltd. Globe Vintage is also known as: Globe.
