Ocean Park Audio Labs Cyclops
Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone
The Cyclops is an original, US-made ribbon microphone from Ocean Park Audio Labs founder Peter Alton. It is a passive ribbon with a natural bidirectional pickup pattern.
The mic’s design was inspired by the Rauland Univel and Duovel, the American DR 330, and Geloso ribbon mics whose iconic looks are prized by collectors.
Each microphone is completely handmade. The body is machined from polished aluminum and Delrin (acetyl resin plastic). A built-in yoke mount saves the need for external mic clips; the mic’s angle within the yoke can be adjusted via a pair of bright red thumbscrew knobs.
The ribbon motor incorporates a 2.25'' (57mm) length of corrugated 1.8-micron aluminum and twin 52mm Neodymium magnets. Pictured at right is a prototype ribbon motor similar to the one developed for the Cyclops.
Full acoustic test data and a review of this mic are forthcoming.
