Microtech Gefell MT 71 S
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The MT 71 S is a transformerless, fixed-cardioid FET condenser utilizing Gefell’s famous M7 capsule. It is the single-pattern version of the UMT 70S.
Switches on the mic body enable a -10dB pad and a high-pass filter (at 90Hz).
Despite its resemblance to dynamic handheld microphones, the MT 71 S is a side-address microphone.
The omni-directional pattern shows a slight 2dB rise in the vicinity of 10.5kHz while the bass response is perfectly flat. The cardioid and figure 8 patterns exhibit a smooth treble boost rising which peaks at about 4dB in the range of 7kHz. This response coupled with a slight roll-off at low frequencies is what gives the microphone its legendary “presence”.
Steve Beckett - Mojo Pie
It’s great on everything I’ve put it on from vocals to piano to guitar amps. If you own one and your recordings suck, then you just need to quit.
The mic is available in two colors:
- satin nickel (p/n 211126)
- matte black (p/n 211127)
Both are shipped in a wooden case. As with the multipattern UMT70S, all accessories are optional: foam windscreen, pop filter, mic clip (p/n MH 75), stand clamp (MKV 9), suspension mount (EA 21), etc.
The frequency-response graphs published by Gefell for the UMT 70 S and MT 71 S are identical to those of the M92.1S, UM92.1S, and UM 75, despite the wild variation in topologies, circuitry, and headbasket design among those microphones. We therefore do not expect that those graphs accurately describe the actual response of any of these microphones.
In contrast, the graph linked below is the response of an individual MT 71 S, and is likely typical for current production microphones.
The Microtech Gefell MT 71 S is also known as: MT71S, MT-71, MT-71S.
