MXL 920
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The MXL 920 is a large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone, from MXL’s “900 series,” manufactured exclusively for Guitar Center and its affiliate brands.
The microphone is a hybrid of the MXL 990 and V63M/2006. It shares the transformerless JFET circuitry of all three microphones (derived from the Schoeps CMC-5), with a single-PCB, through-hole implementation like the older 990. It uses MXL’s standard 32mm 6-micron K67-style capsule, like the V63M and 2006.
As of January 2014, the 920’s in Guitar Center’s inventory retain the through-hole PCB pictured here.
The body is essentially a taller version of MXL’s popular 910, although the characteristic cylindrical, fine-mesh 990 headbasket is replaced in the 920 with a tapered, two-layer mesh grille using a coarser outer mesh.
