Lauten Audio LA-120
Detachable-Capsule Pencil Condenser Microphone
The Lauten Audio LA-120 is a two-microphone set of small-diaphragm condensers with detachable capsules. The LA-120 is sold in a “wood-style” box with two of everything: mics, cardioid capsules, omni capsules, and microphone bodies.
Along with its siblings the LA-220, and the LA-320, the LA-120 set is part of the Lauten “Series Black” line launched in 2016. The line is aimed at entry-level engineers working in less-than-ideal acoustic spaces.
The mics have a selection of filters designed with the budding engineer - and his or her less-than-optimum recording space - in mind: each mic has a high cut and low cut both which can be set to either of two frequencies. The high cuts are switchable between 15kHz and 10kHz, and the low cuts between 150Hz and 50Hz.
Tape Op
It’s not hyped at all, and it sounds a lot like the source in a pleasingly neutral but 3D way. Neutral and natural is a great place to start for a mic often used on acoustic sources, and we can just EQ to taste if we need more or less of some frequency.
