CardioidIK Multimedia iRig Mic

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The iRig Mic is a handheld condenser mic designed specifically for use with mobile computing platforms, including Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

The mic’s form factor is that of a typical handheld dynamic stage mic. It uses an electret condenser capsule, which provides higher sensitivity and better clarity than most dynamic cartridges.

A switch on the mic body provides selection of three sensitivity levels. A similar feature can be found on BLUE’s Mikey microphone for Apple iPhone/iPad.

The output cable on the iRig Mic is permanently attached. It plugs into the TRRS (headphone/mic) input on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and many Android devices. According to IK, it can be plugged into most Macs built since 2008, except for the Mac Pro line.

The TRRS jack on the mic’s cable has a passthrough port, so that a pair of headphones or earbuds can be simultaneously connected for monitoring purposes.

To be clear about compatibility, the iRig Mic is neither designed for nor compatible with traditional recording studio preamps, nor common USB/firewire audio interfaces. It is designed exclusively for use with mobile computing devices, and provides a much higher-quality audio track than the built-in microphones on those devices.

The iRig Mic ships with a zippered storage pouch, a hard mount, and European thread adapter. Included are three iOS apps: VocaLive FREE, AmpliTube FREE, and iRig Recorder FREE.
