Audio-Technica ATM61HE
Hypercardioid Dynamic Microphone
The ATM61HE is a handheld dynamic vocal microphone in a traditional ball-mic form factor. It utilizes a rare-earth magnet for increased sensitivity, and incorporates a patented diaphragm damping mechanism that avoids unwanted mid-frequency resonances that plague similar designs.
In the obfuscated language of the patent:
Patent 5,255,328
It is an object of the invention to provide a dynamic microphone which can suppress the occurrence of the abnormal resonance with low costs without changing the shape of [the] edge portion of a diaphragm in order to improve the drawbacks in the conventional techniques.
In plainer English, the patent appears to refer to the use of viscous adhesive for attaching the diaphragm to the rest of the capsule structure. Other types of glue can harden, causing diaphragm stiffness that creates unwanted resonances.
For more detail, see the sidebar link to the patent.
The mic is also available with an on/off switch; this variation has model number ATM61HE/S.
The Audio-Technica ATM61HE is also known as: ATM-61HE, ATM61, ATM61HE/S.
