Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The Black Berry and Black Berry (II) are Alctron’s two visual clones of the Violet Design Ltd. Amethyst StandardViolet Design Amethyst Standard. The II trades the Amethyst’s dual-post headbasket suspension for a traditional bottle-style head.

The capsule is a 34mm OD, large-diaphragm, center-terminated design with a 6-micron diaphragm. The rear diaphragm is probably not sputtered, as this is a Cardioid-only microphone.

The impedance conversion circuit is described as Class A and transformerless. It has very low self-noise of 14 dBA, and a high max SPL of 145dB (0.5% THD).

The mic includes a U-shaped bracket that wraps around the mic from behind; it attaches via elastic bands to the grommets fixed to the side of the microphone body. This appears to provide effective shockmounting of the microphone in a relatively low-profile package.

According to Alctron, the grille is a multilayer brass mesh, and the circuitry is built “using only the best quality selected components.” Oddly, the Alctron catalog also refers to this microphone as the “Black Strawberry.”
