Beijing 797 Audio Co. Ltd. U95S
Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone
The 797 Audio “U95S” is a multipattern tube condenser microphone. It is the company’s model CR998, with exterior metalwork designed to mimic the Soundelux U95S.
According to David Bock, the first production run of Soundelux U95S microphones was produced by 797 Audio, but due to inconsistent production and quality challenges, required rebuilding in the US. 797 Audio subsequently provided metalwork (bodies and chassis components) as well as capsules for the Soundelux microphone, and some time later, introduced its own “U95S” microphone.
The published specs for the 797 Audio U95S nearly match those of the company’s CR998, also a multipattern tube condenser. Both mics are specified with a 6072 tube, a dual-diaphragm 6-micron K67-style capsule, and a transformer-coupled output circuit. These components are all of Chinese origin. The amplifier circuits and transformers in the 797 U95S and CR998 are identical, according to 797 Audio.
The Soundelux U95S used a variety of higher-grade components, as well as David Bock’s original amplifier circuit design, and should be regarded as a completely different microphone.
