In compliance with the California Dept of Consumer Affairs' "RULES FOR OPERATION OF CONTESTS AND SWEEPSTAKES," we declare:
- Following are the full and complete rules for the October, 2011 RecordingHacks Microphone Giveaway.
- No purchase nor consideration is necessary to enter.
- The winner is responsible for any local, city, county, state, and/or federal taxes.
- Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
- This sweepstakes is void in Quebec, and wherever prohibited by local law; the sweepstakes is also void in countries embargoed by the United States, including but not limited to: Columbia, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria.
- If a Canadian resident wins a prize, that person must also answer correctly within a 5 minute time period a mathematical skill-testing question without the benefit of any calculating devices before the prize will be awarded.
- Only one entry per person.
- The sweepstakes will end, and winner be announced, no later than November 2, 2011.
- Entrants agree that RecordingHacks and sweepstakes sponsors can use the winner's name and image in future promotions.
- The winner shall be selected at random from the pool of qualified entrants. Odds of winning depend on the number of entrants.
- Exactly one prize (consisting in October of a single Blackspade Acoustics UM25 condenser microphone) will be awarded. In the event that we cannot contact the winner within 48 hours of the drawing, she or he will forfeit the prize and a new winner will be selected.
Blackspade UM25 Giveaway
This month’s microphone giveaway is sponsored by Blackspade Acoustics. They have donated one of their newest microphones, called the UM25.
The name might not be familiar, but the historical reference will be. The UM25 is a premium tube condenser modeled after the venerable Telefunken Ela M 251E — arguably one of the most sought-after microphones of all time.
The UM25 will retail for $2,099.

The Prize
The UM25, like the Ela M 251, is a tube-and-transformer microphone with a large-diaphragm capsule. It was designed by Oliver Archut’s company, AMI, and like all Blackspade microphones is built and tested at AMI’s facility in Gaylord, KS.
It incorporates some intriguing components, such as a newly designed “CK25” capsule and NOS Telefunken tube, plus an AMI output transformer.
Add to that the hands and ears of Oliver Archut, and you have a recipe for a mic that’s going to win a prime location at the top of a great many mic lockers.

The “BLACKSPADE” UM25 appears to cover the bases I am interested in…great heritage, with a modern approach. These guys are not afraid of innovation.
On the other hand, the baby is still in the bath! By all reports the sound is amazing.
I would be delighted to have one of these mics reign over my mic cabinet.

Would love to compare this to my U99 on my wife’s voice. U99 gets a bit harsh and peaky in the 1 to 2k region.
