Royer R-121 Microphone Giveaway

Royer Labs R-121 Ribbon MicrophoneThis month’s microphone giveaway is sponsored by my friends at Royer Labs. They have donated an R-121 ribbon microphone!

This contest is open to musicians, producers, recordists, audio engineers, podcasters, voice artists, and studio owners. Winners will be asked to submit a photo of their home or commercial studio.

The winner’s name was drawn on July 31, 2011: Congratulations to Jason Miller of Franklin, TN!

See this month’s giveaway!

The Prize

The R-121 has been a studio standard since its introduction in 1998. It is a passive ribbon microphone with Royer’s patented “offset ribbon” design, which provides a subtly different tone from the back of the microphone.

Steve Albini

The R121 takes advantage of modern, tight-tolerance machining technologies to make its housings and modern, high-field-strength magnetic materials to make its magnets. The result is a “classic” ribbon mic in a very compact housing.

It absolutely excels at recording guitar amps… I plugged in my trusty Telecaster to a nice Marshall JCM800 and a 2×12 cab loaded with Greenbacks. I positioned the R-121 in front of the cab, about 3'' off the grill cloth and tilted slightly towards the side of the cone. I’ll admit I got the position from the mic’s manual.

I went into the control room and brought up the fader. I really wasn’t prepared for what came out of the monitors that day. It sounded just like the amp: Full, rich and detailed. No harshness or any nasty overtones that I’d normally have to EQ out during mixdown. This was the sound I’d been trying to get for years.

I’m entering for my 18 year old son who is on the Autism Spectrum. He’s starting college in the fall studying Sound Arts at the local community technical college. This would really help him in setting up a home studio.

building an in-home studio to help young guys experiment with sound& lay down tracks, maybe build a demo … i live in a small university town and no one has any money, so this is a crucial INCUBATOR environment, particularly for the singer/songwriter crowd … ROYER ribbon mics rock(!) and would be awesome to have one for capturing clean source signal … hope i win (for the cause)! …

Winning this mic now would relieve some serious G.A.S. at a time of monstrous medical bills. I’ve been itching to buy a good ribbon for over a year; this ribbon is among the best.

I have never had or tried a ribbon mic in my studio and I hear Royer’s are top of the line. If what they say about this mic is true, I don’t want to be without one. Cheers.

A R-121 would make a great companion for my SF-12 and Neve Portico. I am sure the R-121 is everything like my SF-12, so it is a must have for The Red Room Audio Services.
