BidirectionalStager Microphones SR-3

Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone

The SR-3 passive ribbon mic is the newest mic in the Stager Microphones line, incorporating the longest ribbon and producing the highest output in the range.

According to Matt Stager, the SR-3 is more transparent, and despite having 6dB more output, it displays less noticeable proximity effect than other Stager offerings.

As with most ribbon mics, the SR-3 features a bidirectional (figure-8) polar pattern. The pickup pattern is symmetrical, unlike some modern ribbon mics with an offset ribbon. The ribbon and its motors are made in-house with a custom corrugating machine. The ribbon itself measures 3 inches long by 0.25 inches wide, with a thickness of 1.8 microns.

The frequency response for the SR-3 is unpublished.

The magnets in the SR-3 are rare-earth neodymium types, which is likely part of the reason this model has higher output; NIB (neodymium-iron-boron) magnets have more power for a given volume than AlNiCo or ceramic magnets. Many modern ribbon microphones use neodymium magnets.

Like the rest of the line, the SR-3 employs a custom toroidal transformer wound in-house by Matt Stager, who also presses his own grilles, does the powdercoating and performs all wiring and assembly.

Most technical specifications are not provided by the manufacturer.

The SR-3 ships in an aluminum case. Matched pairs are available.

Stager offers a lifetime re-ribboning service.
