Telefunken Elektroakustik Ela M 270
Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone
The Ela M 270 is a dual-capsule, multipattern stereo tube condenser microphone. It is a recreation of the original Telefunked GmbH microphone of the same name.
In essence, the mic is a stereo version of the Ela M 251E. The Ela M 270 consists of a pair of CK-12 capsules, matched amplifier circuits, matched Haufe T14-style transformers, and a single 6072a dual-triode vacuum tube.
Telefunken manufactures the CK-12 capsule in-house. The same capsule is found in all the company’s Ela M 250, 251, 250E, and 251E microphones.
Two pattern-selection switches on the mic body enable the top and bottom capsules to be independently set to Cardioid, Omnidirectional, or Figure-of-8.
The top capsule can be rotated 180° with respect to the fixed, lower capsule. This allows the microphone to be used for single-point stereo recording. For example, by rotating the top capsule 45–90° and setting both capsules to Cardioid, the mic can be used for X-Y recording. Setting the top capsule to Figure-of-8 and rotating it to 90° allows for Mid-Side recording — although the Mid and Side would have to be decoded to L/R externally. Setting both capsules to Fig-8 at 90° creates a Blumlein pair.
Due to the high cost of sourcing matched components, including capsules and transformers, the M 270 is hand-built to order.
The ElaM 270 ships with a padded wooden storage box for the mic, a swivel mount, a power supply and cable, and a padded suitcase.
The frequency-response graphs on this page are copied from the Ela M 251E, which should be nearly identical.
