Naiant X-T
Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone
The Naiant X-T was a general-purpose omnidirectional condenser microphone that featured multiple powering option and multiple switchable filters to “tune” the mic to fit a variety of sources.
The mic could be powered by phantom power (+9V minimum), via console or external battery packs. With appropriate adapter cables (from Naiant), the X-T could be powered by “plug-in power” or Soundblaster-compatible PC mic input power.
Two different 10mm electret condenser capsules were available (but not interchangeable). The “flat response” capsule had a mild presence peak at 6kHz and a rolloff above 15kHz. In contrast, the “tailored response” capsule had a presence peak at 2kHz and a sharper rolloff above 12kHz. Both were omnidirectional.
Four internal switches provided additional color options:
- Transformer bypass - defeating the transformer would raise the mic’s output level and presumably alter the timber as well.
- Transformer primary center tap - By reducing the transformer ratio, the mic’s output level would go up, but the low-bass output would be reduced. Effectively, this feature acts like a high-pass filter.
- Transformer secondary center tap - Halves the output impedance, decreases output level, and increases bass response. Useful for loud sources.
- High shelf EQ cut - reduces HF output by 3dB at 2kHz, to -6dB above 4kHz. Can be paired with the “primary center tap” switch to create a midrange-focused sound.
The X-T was discontinued in 2009.
