Marik improves the MXL 991 by re-machining the backplate of the capsule to extend the bass response. Next he upgrades the circuitry with high-quality capacitors and adjusts the input bias, resulting in an extended frequency response and clarity throughout the microphone’s range.

Description
The MXL 991 is a small-diaphragm condenser mic with a fixed cardioid (described by MXL as “wide cardioid”) pickup pattern.
The gold-sputtered diaphragm is 6 microns thick and measures 20mm in diameter. The capsule, and in fact the circuit design, match the MXL 603S, although the vendor’s published frequency charts describe the 991 as a much brighter mic, with a +3dB point at ~5k and +5dB at ~9k.
The mic ships with a standard mic clip. A suspension shockmount is available separately; look for p/n MXL-41-603.
