Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

The JZ GTR-1 is a dynamic microphone designed specifically for capturing electric guitar amps and combos. Its low profile side-address design suggests easy placement by draping it over a cabinet; its all-metal body is built to withstand the demands of stage or studio use.

The GTR-1 has a more open top end than most dynamic mics, extending to 18kHz. It also has a pronounced bass roll-off starting around 250Hz, which prevents excessive bass response (proximity effect) from close placement:

In the studio I often use a mic distance of around 250 to 300 mm, so that’s what I tried first, keeping the mic close to the speaker axis. Playing back the recording produced a pretty good result, but it sounded somewhat bass light compared with how I heard the amp in the room, presumably because of that low-end roll-off. Repeating the test with the mic 30 to 50 mm from the grille produced a much better balance[.]

The GTR-1 is sold with a pouch and clip.

The mic was released in 2015.
