Cardioid Condenser Microphone

Nadine is a medium-large diaphragm (26mm) condenser microphone designed specially to mount on and capture an upright bass. It is a two-part design consisting of the microphone head that mounts between the strings above the tailpiece on a rubber grommet, and the shaft/connector that straps to the tailpiece with Velcro and another two rubber grommets for spacing, so as not to mar the finish of the tailpiece. The grommets and strap are both included. A 14-inch Mogami cable connects the two sections of the mic.

The mic can be stored on one bass permanently, or moved between basses with minimal effort.

Nadine shares some qualities with Ear Trumpet’s Chantelle vocal mic, including its capsule (a TSB-2555 electret), its headbasket, and its low-cut filtering. However, because an acoustic bass is naturally quieter than a vocal, Nadine has a higher output and is more sensitive.

The low-cut circuit is integral to Nadine’s instrument-specific design. Upright basses are extraordinarily boomy in the lows and low-mids when close-mic’d, so the low cut (aka “high pass”) filter — starting at 250Hz — counteracts the boominess and give a reasonably flat signal to the preamp.

Nadine, like all Ear Trumpet microphones, is designed to be used in both in the studio and, thanks to its feedback-rejection capabilities, in live performance.
