Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone

Mabel is a multipattern FET condenser microphone with a transformerless output circuit. A 3-position switch on the top of the capsule head allows selection of Cardioid, Omni, or Figure-8 polar patterns.

The mic uses two electret Cardioid capsules, mounted back to back. This is a somewhat unconventional approach to creating a multipattern transducer; most condenser mics use a single dual-diaphragm capsule.

[This approach] has advantages in an especially deep null at the sides of the figure 8 pattern and greater control over the directional frequency response across all the patterns.

Capsules are selected and matched by hand. With a 26mm outside diameter, these capsules are slightly smaller than what we typically classify as “large diaphragm.” They are mounted in a Sorbothane harness, which provides insulation from mechanically transmitted noise.

The capsule head is held by a stainless steel yoke, which confers advantages for positioning the mic relative to a sound source.
