Ear Trumpet Labs Evelyn
X/Y Stereo Condenser Stereo Microphone
Evelyn is a stereo microphone made by Ear Trumpet Labs in Portland, Oregon. Like other Ear Trumpet mics, it is manufactured with a vintage aesthetic using copper plumbing pipe and fixtures, electrical flanges, brass, and stainless steel. Its look, rugged design, and feedback rejection capabilities make it usable in a live, on-stage situation just like its sister microphones.
The microphone is a dual-capsule design - each head has a 26mm TSB-2555 electret capsule - with the heads mounted on a swiveling and pivoting bracket, like Ear Trumpet’s Edwina. The swivels and pivots allow the Evelyn’s capsules to be aimed at the same source for stereo capture, or at two different sources at once. Evelyn is primarily designed for stereo mic’ing, however, so the heads are mounted 17 centimeters apart, which is the correct spacing for ORTF stereo technique.
Both the capsules and the JFET transistors are hand-matched for stereo imaging.
The signal of the capsules comes out of the central copper shaft’s 5-pin XLR stereo jack, and the Evelyn ships with the corresponding 5-pin to dual-XLR stereo cable. 48v phantom power is needed for each capsule, separately.
Though the Evelyn looks like two Edwina mics, sonically is has more in common with Ear Trumpet’s Myrtle microphone. For instance, because Evelyn is not designed for close-up work, it has no low cut filtering. This gives the microphone a longer “reach” in the low end, and thus Ear Trumpet recommends placing the mic no closer than 6'' from the source.
Evelyn comes with a mic clip and stereo cable, and is shipped in a metal tool case with foam padding.
