BidirectionalColes Electroacoustics 4104

Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone

The Coles 4104 “lip microphone” is a noise-cancelling ribbon primarily used for broadcasting from noisy environments such as sports events.

The 4104 was original built by STC for the BBC. STC outsourced their production to Coles in 1974.

The mic is designed to be used very close to the mouth. The metal bar extending past the capsule is to touch the upper lip, ensuring the ideal distance.

The mic also features steel mesh nose and mouth guards. Removable plastic hygienic covers are included.

The 4104 uses a low-mass corrugated aluminum ribbon protected by fine woven nylon gauze. The ribbon is damped to control transient response.

Coles Electroacoustics

  • Better than 30 dB average discrimination between voice and background noise.
  • Provides speech of broadcast quality completely free from breath noises.
  • Flat frequency response at the controlled talking distance.

The 4104 is also available with a “Push To Talk” button (4104PTT).

The Coles Electroacoustics 4104 is also known as: 4104B, 4104PTT.
