Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The M177 is a large diaphragm condenser with a fixed cardioid pickup pattern and switchable 20dB pad and HPF. (See the M179 for a dual-diaphragm, multipattern version of the same basic design.)

Hugh RobjohnsAt 11dBA, these mics are 3dB quieter than the AKG C414, 1dB quieter than the Neumann U87 and only 1dB noisier than a Sennheiser MKH80 — impressive company indeed!

See the SOS review for a detailed discussion of the M177’s phantom-power requirements. The mic demands high current, prompting Hugh Robjohns to warn against using multiple M177/M179 mics on long cable runs from a single preamp.
