CardioidCAD Audio GXL1200

Cardioid Pencil Condenser Microphone

The CAD GXL1200 is an end-address, small-diaphragm condenser microphone that accepts interchangeable capsules.

GXL1200The circuit is transformerless, and is modeled after the Schoeps design. The sample we’ve seen uses through-hole components. The signal wire from the capsule is insulated from the circuit board; this helps prevent noise.

Polarization voltage in our sample was 46VDC.

The mic’s cardioid capsule is a true condenser model. It is detachable, although CAD has not offered any alternative patterns such as omni or hypercardioid.

Sound On Sound 2006

The GXL1200 has a fresh, open sound that works well with just about any instrument, though it also produces a nice vocal sound when used with a pop shield. It’s good on acoustic guitar, but seems to be able to wring detail out of just about any instrument, especially percussion.

The CAD Audio GXL1200 is also known as: GXL-1200.
