Audix SCX1
Detachable-Capsule Pencil Condenser Microphone
Billed as the “Audix SCX-One system,” this microphone is a transformerless FET condenser head amp with multiple detachable capsules.
The amplifier circuit is the same as found in the SCX-25.
Making sense of the specs is confusing, because the mic has undergone at least one major hardware revision without a corresponding change in model name. The effects of of the redesign are not subtle:
- Sensitivity of the Cardioid capsule jumped from 14 to 26 mV/Pa.
- The original “Omni with Presence” capsule replaced the flat-response Omni capsule.
All seven known capsules are listed below. The current production models are marked as such. Nobody (perhaps not even Audix) knows for sure if the old and new Cardioid and HC capsules are the same.
The SCX-One system originally contained an optional, detachable -10dB pad. This device is no longer available.
Optional accessories available separately:
- shock mount
- pop filter screen
- windscreen

The SCX-one is overall a warm-sounding mic with “cautious” highs and a lean low-end response. Its tendency to emphasize midrange frequencies and downplay lows can, depending on the source, result in an alternately rich and thick or boxy and muddled sound. Also, it sometimes sounds slightly flat or “removed” from the source. In our tests, the SCX-one did best on acoustic guitar…
The Audix SCX1 is also known as: SCX-1, SCX1, SCX, SCX1-C, SCX1-O, SCX1-HC.
The mic was released in 1998.
