Audio-Technica AT835ST
Multi-Pattern Condenser Stereo Microphone
The AT835ST is a stereo shotgun microphone with a pair of electret condenser capsules and an internal stereo matrix that produces three stereo pickup patterns:
- Mid-side
- L/R Stereo, Wide
- L/R Stereo, Narrow
A second switch on the microphone enables a high-pass filter.
The mic has a 5-pin XLR connector, and includes a 24'' breakout cable (XLR5F to two XLR3M). Also included: a mic clip (p/n AT8405a), a foam windscreen (p/n AT8134), and a carrying case.
See also the AT815ST, a 15'' version of the same microphone.
Electronic Musician, 2001
Though the AT835ST delivers pleasant ambience, its stereo imaging reflects a compromise inherent to such directional microphones: it images strongly to the center and sides, with somewhat vague transitions in between. In addition, I encountered occasional left-right ambiguity with moving sound sources. That is no surprise, because the microphone is primarily designed with directionality rather than stereo imaging as its main goal.
